Congressional Support
ImageWhether it has been getting the project authorized, moving it through the various approval processes, or securing annual funding, a hallmark of Lewis & Clark has been the strong bipartisan support and effective leadership of its current and previous elected officials. When it comes to the critical mission of providing drinking water to the region, there are no party lines or state lines. Lewis & Clark's congressional delegation, which includes Senators Johnson, (D-SD), Thune (R-SD), Grassley (R-IA), Harkin (D-IA), Klobuchar (D-MN) and Coleman (R-MN), and Representatives Walz (D-MN), King (R-IA), and Herseth Sandlin (D-SD), have been steadfast in their support. President Bush has voiced his support of the project.* In addition, Lewis & Clark enjoys strong support from Governors Rounds (R-SD), Culver (D-IA), and Pawlenty (R-MN), as well as the state legislatures in SD, MN, and IA and local leaders. It is this partnership and cooperation among federal, state, and local levels of government that will continue to move the project forward to completion.
* "A priority is to work with states on important development projects. And the Lewis & Clark Rural Water Project is a project that will be in my budget, and something that we can work together on." President George W. Bush, remarks in Sioux Falls, SD, March 9, 2001.
